I Should Have Been Dead 3 Years Ago…

Posted by Kimball Roundy | 41 Degrees

So, it’s November 8th 2009. 3 years ago, according to all the laws of Science, I should have died. My Brother did, his wife did, but for a number of reasons that I’m not going to get into in this post, God decided to keep me alive…

It was November 8th 2006, my brother, his wife, our friend Mike and myself decided to take one last trip up to Strawberry Reservoir, a high mountain lake that has some of the best fishing in Utah. It was early November and for those of you who don’t live hear generally means that it was COLD! And it was. This was our last opportunity to take a trip up to Strawberry because there was a huge snow storm that was supposed to be rolling in that night, and the lake would likely be beginning to freeze over within a week or two.

Our Trip started out great, the skies were clear, the air was crisp, the water was smooth as glass and the prospect of catching a lot of fish seemed promising….

That’s the start of the story, and to keep this blog post short, I’ll skip ahead to the part about why I should be dead.

About 4 hours after the trip started, we were out in the very middle of the lake, about 2.5 miles away from the closest shoreline. It was around 11:30 in the afternoon, the fishing had been amazing, so amazing that we did not notice that the wind had picked up, and that the increased wind had began to create white cap waves… By the time I noticed, it was far too late. Water had begun splashing over the bow of the boat, filling the front of the boat with water. With each wave that dumped more water in the boat, the front of the boat sank more and more. Before we knew it, or could do anything about it, the boat just sank…

The Water was 41 Degrees, The Shore was 2.5 miles away, the waves that had just sunk the boat were beating on us, making it nearly impossible to swim… And scariest of all (fortunately for me I did not know it at the time, unfortunately for my brother, he did) in 41 degree water, you are dead if you don’t make it out within 30 Minutes…….

If you want to hear the rest of the story, as I described in in a Video presentation I did last year. Check out “My Name is Kimball Roundy and I Should Be Dead” Now.

So, I’m posting this today to tell you about a decision I have made.  I made it late last week, not remembering that today was November 8th, and when I realized what day it was it made my decision and goal that much more important.

Kimball and Brooke Roundy

Kimball and Brooke Roundy

When I met my wife, I weighed 180 Pounds.  I was in the best shape of my life by far.  Due to a number of factors (Snow boarding accident that destroyed my knee, medication I was taking that had weight gain side effects, starting my business and spending every waking minute in front of the computer etc) a year and a half later, I had balooned up to 280 pounds!

This played 2 different roles in that boating accident, one minor, and one MAJOR.

The minor role, was that I was the “Fat Guy” in the front of the boat, that was weighing it down, and making it easier for the waves to come over the edge… Did my weight cause the accident?  No.  Did it play a minor role? Yes, for sure.

So ever since the accident that has kinda been eating at me, in the back of my mind, I have been “wanting” but not fully COMMITTED to losing this weight.  There have been a few times that I have been pretty good at going to the gym, eating better etc.  I got down to 245 pounds at one point, but since then I have creeped back up slowly to 278 Pounds (Last Night).

The MAJOR Role that it played in the accident is that that much extra weight effectively made me a “Polar Bear”.  It for SURE played a role in saving my life.  I was and (NOT FOR LONG) Still am, WELL INSULATED ;-)

On a side note, and the main thing that helps me not beat myself up too much about being the “Fat guy in the front of the boat” is that it is my belief that God made me gain all that weight, because he knew I needed to be a Polar Bear…

So, with all that History setting the stage for my “Decision”, here it is, I am committed to lose 68 Pounds.  And I want your help doing it.

I am so committed, and want to have a little “Skin in the game”, that I will pay $1,000 to the person who is first to hold me accountable for missing a day working out until I reach my goal of being down to 210 pounds.  And I will pay $200 more if someone you tell about this is the one that calls me out on it.

Here’s how this is going to work, If you are interested in being one of my “virtual trainers” and holding me accountable for my daily workout routine, and be eligible for the $1,000 or $200 then you must do the following:

1. Leave a comment on this post, letting me know that you are up for the job.  Tell me WHO Sent you Here, Who told you about this page so they can win the $200 if you win the $1,000 (Neither of you ever will because I am Committed! ;-)

2. Follow me on Twitter, and/or Facebook (Kimball Roundy on Twitter, and/or Kimball Roundy on Facebook)

3. Post a link to this blog post on your Profile on Twitter or Facebook. (Here is the link to it: “http://kimballroundy.com/41-degrees/41-degrees”)

4. ENCOURAGE ME!  Cheer me on like a good personal trainer would :) (The point is NOT to hope I fail so you can get paid, the point is to HELP me ;-)

5. Then watch my updates on Twitter and/or Facebook every day for updates on my workout from that day.  If I missed one of my assigned days (See Below), and do not post about what I did that day, then come back to this post on my blog, and leave a comment calling me out.  The first person to do so, wins the $1,000!

Now, my commitment (What I have to do)

Some sort of workout every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Most workouts will be in the gym, but If I go Snowboarding, Hiking, Bike riding etc, that will count as my workout for the day.

I will post a message at least on Twitter and Facebook each day, before Midnight Mountain Time with the details of what I did that day, as well as periodic updates on my weight, body fat %, Inches lost etc.

If I miss a day, and you call me out on it, then I owe you $1,000.

If I am sick one of those days, I will post that, if there is a family emergency etc. then I will post that.  Other than that, I’m on the hook and committed.

I WILL REACH MY GOAL Weight of 210 by March 1st 2010!

Are you in? Are you willing to help me?

Post your comment below and let me know :)

Tomorrow (Monday 11-8-09) is the first day of the program…

Here we go………………………….

OK, Here are my current “Before” Stats, I might post some pictures later ;-):

Age: 31

Height: 6′ 1″

Weight: 278

Neck: 18

Bicep Right: 17.5

Bicep Left: 17.25

Forearm Right: 12.5

Forearm Left: 12.25

Chest: 46

Waist: 51

Hips: 49

Thigh Right: 30

Thigh Left: 29.5

Calf Right: 17.5

Calf Left: 17.5

total inches lost so far: Just Getting Started!

So That’s it!  That’s where I am starting out.

Remember. leave a comment now if you want to help me.  And remember to post this link to your Twitter and Facebook profile pages.  Also, you need to be cheering me on, posting positive comments at least every couple days to be eligible for the $1,000 or $200 if I miss a day!

Thanks for your support!

Not only will I help you, but I will help myself as well! I would say good luck, but that is not appropriate in this case. Let me say that Heavenly Father does not present us a challenge that we cannot over come with FAITH!

    Kimball,

I don’t give a hoot about the money…I give a hoot about you. I ballooned up to 186 lbs and my ankles were swollen twice their size. I am on a low carb recommended by my endocrinologist because of my thyroid and my age. I have lost 10 lbs. Goal…another 30. I am 61 and this condition of mine is life threatening. I will consider you a partner in success. Our new Eleviv has been a real helper because I am a comfort eater and I was really depressed and stressed. Discloser: NOT AN AD. I have grown really fond of you since our introduction on FB.(And that beautiful baby girl) Helping you would be a blessing. The Good Lord kept me alive too covering up a heart condition I was born with until I was old enough to have open heart surgery and able to survive. That was the 50′s. I have been told that it had to be a miracle that the docs did not hear that whooshing sound instead of a heartbeat from age 1 to 5…completely impossible. So because of your miracle and my miracle we were supposed to meet. Because of that I will be obedient:

You have my promise that I will tweet you and facebook you every morning with my encouragement. I will make double sure you get annoyed with my nagging and loving prodding. I want you to be alive for that baby girl and your beautiful wife. I am so sorry for your loss…as a mother (I grieve for your Mother and Dads’loss too)of a son a couple of yrs older than you, the story broke my heart.

    Julie

    Okay sir,
Time to get off that chair and off the computer. I challange you to take a short walk. I want you to find the kitchen timer, dress appropriatly for the outside tempature, and head out. Set the timer for 10 Minutes. Walk the most downhill direction ONLY until that timer goes off, then turn around and head back home. I know you are excited, but do only this new thing to the routine today. If this gives you a boost of energy that you just have to spend, please take on the dishes or folding towels.

Everything happens for a reason. Your story and your commitment are an inspiration and will undoubtedly touch many people. Yes, I’m on the team. I know you will succeed! Are you able to use the help of natural supplements in structuring your change, if any, in your diet? My sister, Saquina Akanni, by the way you met her at the “Cash for Flash” training, lost 4 dress sizes on a Xango weight control program and we both use the product “Eleviv” mentioned in comment #4. OK, here’s to your success—one day at a time.

Good for you! I’ll be glad to help motivate you. I was heavy most of my life and really peaked after I had several children. I kept thinking that I’m a thin person living in a large body. I lost 80 pounds in 6 months. People didn’t even recognize me, that hadn’t seen me since the summer before. I have now kept it off for 14 years with only minor fluctuations, smaller than any other time in my life. Keep visualizing yourself as trim while you are going through this process. Think of yourself as your perfect weight and focus on that instead of focusing on “losing weight”. Stay active and drink lots of water. Once you get in that cycle it gets easier to keep the momentum going. I know that you’ll succeed! It will change your whole outlook on life!

Gee Kimball, I’m having the same trouble as you are. Once I get stuck in front of the Computer it’s hard to do anything else. Sure I’ll help you out. Lets both lose some weight and get healthy. I’m not sure you’ve heard of Dr Al Sears but he’s helped lots of people lose weight with his PACE program. In it he stresses that long duration of cardio might have adverse effect on health. That’s why some people have died in marathon run. He suggested short burst of intense workout to lose weight. I’ve been following his workout recently and find them helpful as I’m not the kind to do long hours of workouts. Apart from that weight bearing workout are great too as it builds mucsles and muscles burn calories fast. So all the best Kimball.

    Hello Kimball,

I found your story quite impressive.
I am the owner/editor of Netsaga.is, a literary webmagazine with pictures and great music and you could take a look, for it is free.
When I was twenty I caused an auto accident where two of my friends died but I was left paralised below neck, unable to speak and with no memory. The doctors didn’t give me great hopes for the future.
I have just published my bio: My Incredible Struggle After The Accident where I write about my strange life. The book can be bought on http://www.unibook.com and http://www.amazon.com.

Wow – I did not expect to read a story like this in an Internet Marketing Blog!

I’m not bothered about the money but I wish you the very best in your endeavours.

Here I have an idea, why dont you enter yourself into something specific, say a marathon next year and start training for it now so you will have a goal to work against? I have a background of doing this sort of stuff and have found that preparing for an event gives you an extra purpose other than just losing weight and should help motivate yourself to fully see it through.

By doing this you would then have something additional to talk about on FB/Twitter. I would suggest also using a heart monitor to train within your capabilities – this will help your fitness/stamina improve a lot quicker over time.

Anyway best of luck – I need to get out and do something myself……

    Pete

    Hey Kimball,

I have to say, you rock!!!! Taking control of ones life is a hard thing to do sometimes, I applaud you.

Weight Loss as with anything we do in life takes work, effort and time. You didn’t get to the weight you are now overnight, so steady as you go.

Your program SpiderWeb Marketing was the first program I started when I was learning about internet marketing. I know how much time and effort you put into that program. (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
Soooo, I know that you will find the strength to win this challenge as well. Your past endeavors speak LOUD and CLEAR of what you are capable of.

You have to do this for YOURSELF, not family, not friends, not even to win a bet! You are in this to WIN for your life and your health are depending on YOU!

I have lost over 125lbs so I know the struggle that you are facing and am here to say…. YOU CAN DO IT!

GOD gave you a second chance and showed you that LIFE is only for a moment and then its gone. So don’t give up now!

You are an inspiration to many and a Blessing too.

    Karren

Hey,I will try to cheer you on and then maybe I can draw on some of the strength that everyone is sending your way.Somehow I know you will succeed and get to your goal fairly easily.
I am 49 and I am obese and I am stuck in a catch 22 where I have chronic back pain and also my knees and now my hips are very painful all the time so not condusive to walking or even standing for that matter, but just early last week a friend came and took me to the swiming pool as that is the only thing I can do that won’t cause undue stress on my joints.I do keep moving when in the water, but it doesn’t seem to get my heart rate up so I don’t know if it will be for me but I am going to keep trying as my heartrate do get a rise when trying to get out of the pool and get dressed. So I will have to work out some routine and stick to it,and go on the days I am not in soo much pain, such as been this week so far…..but you go and I will cheer you on and like I said, maybe even take a little of your cheers lol….

    wishing you all the best……

    Kimball Roundy,
I am on your team again! Yes, I will follow you and be there for you. My sister, Audri Curtis one of your fans, always forwards your emails to me, so she would get the $200, but I know you have already won this game. I am also part of your “Cash for Flash Group” and was moved when you told your story at the CIAF training. Audri is right, I tore my posterior tibials tendon in my last semester of medical school and was down for a year. I refused the surgery, which would have made me handicap for life and chose treatment with acupuncture and herbs instead. Discovered Xango through Audri, which removed the inflammation from the area allowing the tendon to heal per the MRI. By that time, however I grew to 278 lbs (only 5’2″ no exercise and still eatting:0). I was miserable! I created Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal formula using Xango and lost 4 dress sizes on my “Shrink with Xango program”. I even wrote a blog and a book about my success. I am at your service. Kimball, here is to your success, your health, wealth and prosperity.

    make your work much easier.
Only drink Nikken Water or water that
is PH balanced 7.0 or higher.
Also don’t drink any cokes or other drinks other
than fresh squeezed juices or vegetable juices.
Allow yourself only one beer or at most two glasses
    of red wine a day.
If you drink eight 16 oz. glasses of the water and
none of the others you will see an enormous change
    quickly.
Also you must have a lot of oils that are good for you
so, eat at some good Italian restaurants and lots of
olive oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, raw fresh butter{not
processed}, and fresh sushi and sashimi if you can find
    it.
    Sincerely,
    Oscar

    Hi Kimball Roundy,

I have followed you for over a year now. Your story at strawberry touched me. I remember when this accident happened, although I didn’t know you at the time. Our prayers go out to you and your loved ones. I am 47 yrs old and also on a journey to lose weight and become fit. A friend of mine told me about this product/company here in Utah that just released new health supplements. My wife and I have been taking them for a short time now. I am down 11 Lbs and my wife 12 Lbs and our energy level is extremely high. I am now a distributor for the company and can get the product for almost half price. If you want to give it a shot call me at 801.656.7163 Or if you want to read up on it go to dubnutritionbusiness.com The $1000 dollars would be nice but more importantly you reach your goal and stay there. I have no dought that you will :) Good Luck my Friend!
    Sincerely Michael…

I know you will succeed in attaining your goal, Kimball Roundy. I am so happy that you survived and started your beautiful little family. (Bet your little angel is growing!)

Thank you for sharing your story with me and others. Sorry I don’t have my own personal webpage yet. I didn’t send you to a website that collects any data. If you go there you can just browse at your own leasure and check it out if you want. I peronally lost 35 pounds just drinking the juice and walking a mile and a half twice a day. (It took me about a month.)

Hey Kimball, it is your good old buddy from Canada who ALSO could use to lose some ‘insulation’ even if Winter is upon us and being in Canada, I guess I could easily justify the need to be a ‘Polar Bear’ like my good old yankee amigo Mr. Roundy, EHH? ;) Or should I say HUH, HUH? ;) LOL

So, I am thinking we should try to work something out here and perhaps provide something like a HEALTHY CONTEST and try to think of a way for you and I to go head to head, pound for pound, the North verses the South, Canucks verses the yankees, something fun and crazy like that and figure out an extra spin to this party, what you think? Lets talk about it, I am curious what we can come up with, any ideas anyone?

    Hi Kimball Roundy,

Your story really touched me, but thank God you are still alive for us. However, what i just taught is that you a have faith in any therapy anyone give to you and believe in your self that you can over come it. Also, put every action you carry in direction of God and believe he is going to recover you back with a lot of straight to get back in perfect shape that will be suitable for your name.

Believe in yourself, you can do it.

In my country year, we are living with grace of God.

Take God you are still alive, it’s so touching

    Hi Kimball Roundy,

How is your health? i hope is getting better. Listen, i just gotten something from my doctor that doing excersice and more water has a lot to do with our health. I just thought that that could help you. I will continue doing research to make sure you get back to perfect shape you deserve.

I pray that God will give you enough straight to over come this(amen).
